It’s no secret that the Runnin’ Cubs live and die by the three-point shot and transition baskets, and early in the first quarter they were doing just that going back and forth with the Mustangs. At the end of the quarter Shallowater led 17-16, during the second quarter Brownfield fell into a scoring drought while Shallowater worked on extending their lead to go into the locker room up 29-22. Out of the halftime break both teams went back and forth exchanging baskets but Brownfield couldn’t get the stops they needed to dig into the deficit, going into the final frame of play Shallowater led 48-39. Shallowater threatened to open up the game leading by 17 at one point in the fourth but Brownfield never backed down and tried to mount a comeback late in the fourth but just were not able to get enough shots to drop as Shallowater would go on to win the game 67-58. Brownfield finishes the season with a record of 25-9.

Read moreThe Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs defeated the Kermit Yellowjacket 69-64 in the Bi-District round of the playoffs 69-64. It’s often said that basketball is a game of runs, and Tuesday proved to be just that. Brownfield came out the gates red hot on an 8-0 run, but Kermit answered with a 130 run. By the end of the first quarter, the game was tied at 13. In the second quarter, both teams would go back and forth exchanging buckets, Brownfield had to earn a lot of their looks with Kermit running a 2-3 zone forcing the Brownfield offense to be patient. Later in the quarter Brownfield began to use their full-court pressure to create turnovers and easy opportunities in transition, which paid off and allowed them to take a 30-23 lead into the locker room. Out of the halftime break, Kermit came out hot, going on an 8-0 and reclaiming the lead 31-30. But from that point on, Brownfield would outscore Kermit 2012 to take a 50-43 lead into the final quarter of play. Despite Kermit’s best efforts trying to make a last-minute run back into the game, Brownfield did a great job holding the door shut to leave with the 69-64 win. Brownfield advances to the Area round of the playoffs, where they will meet the #3 Shallowater Mustangs.
